about

Djelia refers to the oral history handed down through stories and song. Culture cultivated through music. The ngoni and west african vocals were recorded by Arnulfo Mancera, a friend in Mexico who travelled with his brother through Burkina Faso and Mali, learning to build and play the local music in small villages. Part of my vocals on this (the dusty sky will settle…) were written three years ago, scribbled in a notebook between teaching classes in rural Ghana. The rest came out all at once one night in Septima Studios with Keli Marks. The risers came from the sounds of rain in Belize, and that deep bass was made from the purring of a cat in Oakland, CA, who has since passed away. Roots Future Digital refers to bringing our culture with us into the digital age, modern day griots jacking into the data feed.

lyrics

This is the story of Creation and a history of Man
Passed down through generations now we hand it down again
I could tell the truth or I could tell you a lie
Truth is honesty gonna wring the water from your eye
You'd think it would be simple but soon enough you will learn
Nothings ever simple all that's cut and dried will burn
Born into hunger and the lucky found a meal
All were born stark naked, some are naked still

Dusty sky will settle to the earth
The rain will fall and offer us rebirth
Our bodies lie entangled like the roots
Of the saplings that our grandfathers grew

Roots go deep listen the beat
Weave these threads of history
Listen the sound, bass gun ya down
This roots future digital
